In 2023, Senate Bill 2124 (88th Texas Legislature, Regular Session) was signed into law, establishing Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.029, Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program. The purpose of the Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program is to increase the number of students who complete advanced mathematics courses in high school.
Gruver ISD offers advanced mathematics beginning in 6th grade, allowing students to complete Algebra I in 8th grade and enroll in advanced mathematics courses in high school.
The law also requires school districts to automatically enroll in advanced mathematics each sixth-grade student who performed in the top 40 percent on the Grade 5 Math STAAR Assessment, OR on a locally developed assessment. Families can decide to opt out of Advanced Math if they feel their student is not ready. For more information, please contact your student’s school.
